Wow, Aritzia says yes!

This is printed on the back of every sales receipt from Aritzia – the store’s refund policy. It starts off with such an empowering tone.

It’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind.

But when you read their actual return policy… not so empowering, init?

Nope. You get TEN days of prerogativeness and then it’s all demoted to store credit prerogativeness. And if you choose to purchase items on sale – no prerogative for you! Oh and if you choose to buy magazines, jewelry (and the rest of the list here), no prerogative either. And then there’s this part:

Merchandise must not be washed, worn or damaged.

You also don’t have the right to refund any used or defective products. Oh wait a second, you do have the prerogative to refund defective goods, as stated by the law.

Thanks Aritzia for one of the worst refund policies.

Yes, they're children's books, but more importantly, they're just the most awesome books. Continue reading →

Christmas is just over a month away! Here, I have two gift ideas especially geared for those people in your life who are impossible to shop for. They’re actually both children’s books, but would get a laugh out of anybody.

1. I Want My Hat Back

Bear? Otter? Beaver? Top of a Hershey Kiss?

On Buzzfeed, I came across the “Best Story Book Ever” - I Want My Hat Back, a tale of mystery and intrigue about a bear (that also looks like an overgrown beaver) on a search for his missing prized possession. It’s not really that dark, it’s a children’s book after all.

Here’s a teaser:

Like, how awesome is that?

Available in hardcover on Amazon for only $10

2. The Story of the Little Mole Who Knew It Was None of his Business

Must. Acquire. Pop. Up. Version.

Words cannot describe how awesome this is as a children’s book. I first discovered this book when I was maybe 8 years old and thanks to the powers that is Google, I have now been reunited with this awesomeness.

The Story of the Little Mole is available on Amazon. WHAT?! There’s a POP UP version? Wishlisted.

You love Starbucks? Phishing sites love you! P.S. Starbucks changed their logo about 6 months ago.

I don’t know what is going on, but I’ve been seeing a lot of Facebook posts with links to sites that apparently give you FREE Starbucks giftcards. Come on, really? If it’s too good to be true and you have to enter a bunch of personal information, it’s just not true and you’re just a sucker.

I guess the shock for me is these people are generally my peers, so I would assume that having grown up with the internet, they would be aware of phishing scams. Maybe these people are my generation of “chain-email” senders.. or maybe they also reply to Princes in Nigeria…

Maybe I’m being too harsh, companies do host giveaways on Facebook, so for someone to believe Starbucks would give away a free drink or gift card to EVERYONE on Facebook is alright, it’s still ridiculous but fine, I see where they’re coming from.

Alright, so gift card giveaway.. kinda believable.. but.. this?

Is this real life?

Wow. Apple would REALLY give away iPad 2′s… What’s your email address? You’re just the luckiest person I know! You’re getting a FREE iPad2 AND you’re about to inherit $10 million… you just have to wire me $8524 so I can get the paperwork together.

You know when you really want that song to speak the moment. The song that shows how much you care. That you care enough to make it official on Facebook? Look no more. Lance Bass has brought to you Heart2Heart and they have brought to the world their song – Facebook Official.

I thought this was a parody. But no, this is very much real life.

See official music video below..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Pt4AWNui9bg

Were ‘Nsync, BSB and other 90s boy bands as creepy as I find this?

And I thought Justin Bieber was bad…

Well what are you waiting for? Check them out on Facebook and make it official by liking them!…..?

And now some parting words: you and me, you and me…. Facebook Official

Today was a huge day for Facebook and social media in general – Mark Zuckerberg spoke at f8 about the new changes that will be rolling out to Facebook, namely a completely new interface called timeline: https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline This change from a profile to timeline is like creating your own unique website (or infographic, really) about your life.

Apps on Facebook will become much more social and really become a way for people to express who they are and what they do. Activity that appears in your newsfeed, timeline and ticker will be more than “liked something” or “commented on something” but also incorporate all types of verbs “watch” “listen” and all types of nouns. In other words, social media integration with Facebook via apps is a lot more open now. With the new “ticker,” these activities and apps will be more visible as well.

The new interface is like a browser – having apps on your Facebook are just like having bookmarks. Facebook intergration will be even more important now. And the whole idea of social media integration has reached a new, deeper, more engaging level. It’s not just “sharing” a comment or a page anymore.

P.S. Facebook just got a whole lot creepier too though.

P.P.S. I activated Facebook Timeline on my profile!

P.P.P.S I Google Plus’ed my Facebook Timeline

I came across this entry in Gizmodo today that took a look back at the original homepages of Twitter, Facebook and Google … to show how ugly they were. And to think Facebook and Twitter started in 2004 and 2006 respectively clearly shows how far website aesthetic and design have come along. Also, Twitter was Twttr and Facebook was The Facebook and apparently Google had more enthusiasm as Google!.

This was the original Twitter (Twttr) logo. No cute blue bird, just green jello.

So I decided to do a little digging around to see what OTHER major sites looked like way back in the day…

There’s actually an internet archive on.. the internet!

It’s a tool called the “Way Back Machine” on archive.org.

Do you remember AOL and their CDs? Well if you were on aol.com on Dec 20th, 1996, this is what you would have saw…

Click on image to go to archived site.

Look at those gifs!

With Way Back Machine, you can actually click to other pages on the site too, beyond the homepage. The archives appear to go back to as far as 1996 and you can choose to see any website you want at any date that the site was crawled by the archives.

Let’s take a look at another one that’s more recent. WordPress.org was first crawled by the archives on June 18th, 2003 and it looked like this…

How far we've come, WordPress...

Be warned, this Way Back Machine thing is quite addicting!

The Five Point

Location: 3124 Main Street, Vancouver (map)

Jamie and I like to go for brunch. We tend to argue what time brunch should happen (he argues that brunch, being the marriage of breakfast and lunch, should happen between those two meal times and I believe that since brunch is often served until 3 or later, should be eaten whenever). Anyhoo, we have decided that we have outgrown our go-to place De Dutch, so we’re now venturing to other brunch spots in Van.

Our first stop was The Five Point on Main and 15th ave ish, just across the street from our fave Burgoo.

The Five Point is a trendy and comfortable looking place with dark wood tables and booths with black leather upholstery. There is a patio and several arrangements of seating – bar, lounge, booths and tables.

Here’s their full brunch menu in pdf. The Five Point notes that they serve with Omega-3 eggs (which make the best poached eggs ever!)

Chorizo and 3 Potato Hash for $11.95

I got the above – the Chorizo and 3 potato hash which comes with:

Sweet potato, Kennebec potato, baby red potato, green
onions, 2 poached eggs, house-made hollandaise

I don’t really know why I got that, because I don’t even like sweet potato, but while all the components (hash, chorizo and eggs) tasted good, it was really nothing special.

Pulled Pork Benny's for $9.95

Jamie saw Pulled Pork Benny and did not consider anything else.

(Served on an English muffin with hash browns, seasonal
fruit and house-made hollandaise)

For that price, the portion was quite generous. There was a hefty serving of pulled pork, which was tender and on the sweet side, but most importantly, with a healthy meat-to-sauce ratio.

All in all, we enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back again for brunch and possibly lunch/dinner. They had $10 lunch specials and the ambiance was great to grab a drink with friends. For brunch, we’d probably stick with the $9.95 Benny’s options, which we found to be much better value.
